You may be surprised to learn that there are no FDA-approved medications to treat BPD. This doesn't mean that medications can't be helpful; just that there is no one approved medication that specifically targets all of the symptoms.
Fortunately, research has found that medication can address some specific BPD symptoms. For example, antidepressants can reduce low mood and sadness, antipsychotics can decrease impulsivity, and mood stabilizers can address rapid mood changes. Still, medication is probably most helpful when it is used in conjunction with psychotherapy and other treatments.
