What is Splitting?

Ever heard people use the term "splitting" in borderline personality disorder (BPD), and wonder what that meant? Splitting is a very common feature of BPD that is related to dichotomous thinking, or the tendency for people with BPD to see things in very "all or nothing" terms. Splitting can wreak havoc on relationships, so it is important to be aware of it when it occurs.
