Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment Boosted in the U.S. Economic Bailout Bill

From Kristalyn Salters-Pedneault, PhD, About.com GuideOctober 9, 2008

You may not know that the economic bailout bill that was signed into law last week is particularly important for people with serious mental health conditions like borderline personality disorder (BPD). That's because, tucked into this bill, are provisions that finally ensure mental health parity for people with mental illness.

What is mental health parity? Essentially, it means that insurance companies must treat mental illness like they would any physical illness; they cannot charge extra co-payments for mental health treatment, and they cannot cut off treatments that are deemed necessary. There are some exceptions to the rule, but by-and-large, this bill is good news for people struggling to get their insurance to pay for the mental health treatment they need.
