Faster Acting Antidepressants on the Way?
Many people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are taking antidepressant medications-- BPD has a high rate of co-occurrence with depression, and some of the symptoms of BPD (e.g., feelings of emptiness, apathy) seem to overlap with symptoms of depression.
While newer antidepressant medications are a tremendous improvement over older medications in terms of side effects, they still don't reduce everyone's depression, and many take time to work. But, that may be about to change. Researchers have recently discovered a drug that can cause very rapid relief of symptoms of depression-- this drug may reduce depressed mood within hours of being ingested! More work is needed to develop a safe medication for use in humans, but this is a good first step toward the next generation of antidepressants.
