People with personality disorders (PDs), including borderline PD, have very high drop out rates in therapy relative to people without PDs. However, very little research has been done to examine why people with PDs drop out of therapy. If you were in therapy for BPD at one time, why did you drop out? Were there particular obstacles that came up?
Here are a few reasons that come to mind:
- My therapist didn't understand me
- My insurance didn't cover it (or I don't have insurance)
- It wasn't working
- I don't have a problem-- it's actually the other people in my life with the problem
What about for you? What were the particular obstacles that came up?
