Thinking of Quitting Therapy for Borderline Personality?

Saturday May 23, 2009

It is not uncommon for people who are getting treatment for a psychiatric disorder such as borderline personality disorder (BPD) to feel like they want to quit therapy. In fact, it is quite natural to get frustrated with therapy or your therapist, or to feel like psychotherapy is not working.

Many people leave therapy before they have reached their treatment goals—research shows that about 47% of patients leave treatment prematurely. Before you make a decision about dropping out of therapy, however, it makes sense to talk to your therapist. Even if your reason for leaving therapy is related to problems you have with your therapist, it can benefit you to have a conversation about it. If nothing else, you will get to practice being assertive about your needs.

Therapy can become long and drawn out, leaving a person feeling that nothing is different – why would I continue.
I’m sure if you listed all the skills you have mastered during therapy you would acknowledge that you are indeed getting a lot from therapy.
If you discontinue therapy before you complete the “round” you will give yourself something to feel guilty about. Force yourself to stay with it and remind yourself after each session that you are strong enough to keep trying. Bottom line is, you don’t have to like it, but you know you have to do it. Best of luck!
