Identity Issues in Borderline Personality Disorder

By May 31, 2009

Do you ever find yourself asking: Who am I? What do I believe in? What is my place in this world? If you do, you are not alone. Many people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) struggle with identity issues -- one of the core symptoms of the disorder.

Plenty of people without BPD struggle with identity issues, too. But people with BPD often have a very profound lack of sense of self. If you struggle with the feeling that you have no idea who you are or what you believe in, this may be a symptom you can relate to. Read more...

I have been married to a Borderline for 8 years and for a long time I thought that I was doing things incorrectly. My wife was finally diagnosed with the condition about three years ago. She is on a lot of medication that I think is unnecessary but I am not sure of that either. I cannot seem to communicate with her in relation to what she needs to be doing to make her life productive. She seems to be more self destructive than anything and it drives me nuts. My issues center around spending money uncontrollably as well as not taking care of the house when I am busy working two jobs. Any advice?

Matthew: I have BPD, bipolar + ADD, in short, I’m “nuts” hehe (: I also happen to be highly intelligent and very creative as many mentally ill are. It was hard to learn to accept, especially the BPD diagnosis..it came last with ADD 1st/bipolar 2nd. All were emotionally difficult to accept. Mentally ill need alot of love, attention and consideration. Can a family member or friend come in to help her clean, or can you do it? Do you have date nites together? Bring her flowers, fragrance – or surprise dinner & movie? It’s up to you as her mate to help her motivate herself. She needs tons of affection and a listening ear that does not interrupt..your undivided attention. The outta control spending could be curbed by making a budget, and discussing her needs and wants together – do you go shopping WITH her?? Medical drugs didn’t work for me at all. Sunshine, fresh air, exercise, hobbies & good friends have helped immensely. Natural lithium & etherium gold work perfectly for me, ..maybe she should find a naturopathic physician?.. as I have. Does she have nice girlfriends to associate with..if not..she definitely needs to find some! If you or she would like to communicate with me, I can be reached at shirleyinfo@juno.com. Wishing you both future success in your all your endeavors! XOXOXO
