Dr. Linehan Responds
For those who have been following the piece on borderline personality disorder in the New York Times, today Dr. Marsha Linehan posted her first responses to reader's questions today. You can read her responses here.
I have to say that I really admire Dr. Linehan for a number of reasons. First, she is a scientist and she is very dedicated to finding treatments for BPD that are proven to work. But also, I just really like her way of being able to "tell it like it is." For example, in answer to a question about how to help a BPD family member who does not want help, Dr. Linehan began her response with:
"If another person does not see the need for getting help, it is their right to not do it. Sorry."
You have to respect someone who doesn't mince words!

I think I may have borderline personality disorder. Who do I turn to in this crisis?
Find a good therapist and consult him/her right away.
I get tired of people always telling you to get therapy. It’s like they think everyone has money and/or health insurance. I’m in poverty and unemployed, therefore I don’t have any means for hiring a therapist. I also live in a rural area where there isn’t anyone trained in treating people with BPD.
Carmen and everyone who does not have the option to enter therapy for BPD. You have a computer, search for forums, books that you can ask your library to get for you, articles, skills and techniques.
There is hope, you will feel stronger and more accomplished having done your research and you will find that you can learn what others learn during therapy sessions. You can do this!
Checking in…I just wanted to say that the first thing I see when I get my computer up and going stuck out here on this boat in the middle of this lake down here in Acworth, GA, is bpd.about.com. It’s on my igoogle page! Get one Carman, save all your stuff there.
Also, you may want to make a few phone calls. I’m getting therapy payed for by my county/state. I am also unemployed and have no income (the only reason I’m not homeless is because a friend is playing savior) and they’re even setting me up with a psychiatrist and free meds.
