Many people with BPD have stories of misdiagnosis, but how often does it really happen? Unfortunately, there is very little research to draw from, but at least one study suggests that BPD does get misdiagnosed at fairly high rates. A study by researchers at the University of North Texas and Brown University found that nearly 40% of people with BPD in the study sample had previously received a misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder.
There have also been reports of people with BPD being misdiagnosed with psychotic disorders and Asperger's disorder (a type of developmental disorder on the autism spectrum), although there is no research exploring cases of this nature. Read more....

I was seen by a Child Psychologist. At the Age of 22years old. So I was NOT a Child.
& this Psychologist Incorrectly diagnosed me as having B.P.D.
And just recently August 2010,
I was given the Correct Diagnosis of Aspregers, & I feel that any one who gets Diagnosed with B.P.D, should get a second opinion.
From a Psychologist who has Experience & Training in Aspergers,
And Dialectial Behaviour Threapy, D.B.T,
Is a great treatment, for both B.P.D & Aspergers.
I did not fit the criteria to do D.B.T, but fortunately.
The Centre For Pscychotherapy allowed me to join the D.B.T group.
And I Successfully Completed 12 months of Group Therapy,
And 18 months of Individual Therapy.

earlier this year i was diagnosed with BPD, but am still trying to get my head around it…i go to DBT groups, but never seem to meet anyone simular to me, or anyone i can connect with. i feel more and more like an outsider to society and very concerned that my social life and love life will always be minimal to none…does anyone have any advice?
well before i was diagnosied with BPD they diagnosed me with aggrivated deppresion so i often do wounder about my diagnosis saying that ive had the same diagnosis off 3 people now.
I was diagnosed with borderline for many years, in spite of the fact that my behavioral problems didn’t develop until my 30′s. It turned out that Ativan was causing extreme irritability and disinhibited behavior. After I got off Ativan, the “borderline” traits magically went away. I got this problem from a variety of other meds also. My husband figured all this out, since I was so impaired from medications I was taking for bipolar disorder (I get clear cut mania, so no question about that diagnosis).
