Definition:
Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder characterized by episodes of mania and depression. The disorder is further classified as:
- Bipolar 1 with severe mood swings,
- Bipolar 2 with milder episodes of mania and depression
- Mixed bipolar disorder with mania and depression at the same time
This disorder is sometimes evident in children, but most often is diagnosed in early adulthood.
It is hypothesized that untreated bipolar disorder in children may result in the development of BPD.
