"Hallucination"

Definition:

A Hallucination refers to seeing, hearing, feeling something that is not there. For example, a person who hears voices is having an auditory hallucination.

For a person having the hallucination, there reality is the hallucination. It can be similar to a semi-dream state where you are pretty sure you just heard your front door open.

Psychotic states generally require medication to be treated effectively.
