Definition:

The hippocampus, part of the limbic system, is a part of the brain located in the temporal lobe, behind the ear. Humans have two hippocampi – one in each side of the brain. The hippocampus is the part of the brain responsible for forming new memories.

It is hypothesized that the hippocampus is damaged (shrinks due to atrophy) as a result of prolonged major depression, and is linked to the presence of clinical depression. Medications (SSRI’s) and talk therapy to address the depression can positively impact and reverse the atrophy of the hippocampus.
