Definition:

The central nervous system (CNS) consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The CNS contains billions of nerve cells, called neurons, and supporting cells. Neurons communicate through the use of chemical messengers, known as neurotransmitters. Medications that alter the functions of the central nervous system (usually by altering neurotransmitter functions) are often used to treat psychiatric conditions such as borderline personality disorder (BPD).
