Definition: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is the official guidebook for the diagnosis of psychological disorders. The DSM is published by the American Psychiatric Association, and is currently in its fourth edition, text revision (referred to as the DSM-IV or DSM-IV-TR). The DSM-IV includes the symptoms and diagnostic criteria for 297 disorders, and is based on the most current research available in the fields of psychology and psychiatry.
