Definition: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a United States federal government agency that is responsible for ensuring the safety of medications, medical devices, food, and cosmetics. Medications for physical and psychiatric conditions must be evaluated by the FDA and determined to be safe and effective before they can be made available to the public in the United States. The FDA is part of the Department of Health and Human Services.
