Generalized anxiety disorder, or GAD, is one of the anxiety disorders listed in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV).
Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive anxiety and worry about a variety of topics (such as work, school, family, health) occurring more days than not for at least six months. People with GAD find it difficult to control their worry, and often experience other related symptoms including restlessness, irritability, and muscle tension.
