Definition:

What is an MAOI? MAOI stands for "monoamine oxidase inhibitor." MAOIs are a class of medications that are used primarily in the treatment of depression. These medications work by increasing the availability of monoamine neurotransmitters (e.g., serotonin, norepinephrine) in the brain.

In addition to reducing symptoms of depression, MAOIs have proven useful in the treatment of anxiety. MAOIs can also help reduce certain mood symptoms typical of borderline personality disorder (BPD).
