Definition: Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a very rare but potentially fatal side effect of antipsychotic (neuroleptic) medications.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome causes a high fever, delirium, and stiff or rigid muscles. Usually these symptoms come on quickly (over the course of 24-72 hours), and may lead to a coma or even death. Being male and/or between the ages of 20 and 40 are risk factors for developing neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
