Tardive dyskinesia is a serious and sometimes permanent side effect of antipsychotic medications that involves uncontrollable body movements.
People with tardive dyskinesia may experience rapid, involuntary lip smacking, limb or finger movement, tongue protrusion, eye blinking, or facial grimacing. The risk of developing tardive dyskinesia increases the longer a person is on an antipsychotic, but it may appear at any time and does not always stop when the medication is withdrawn.
