Definition: Akathisia is a side effect of antipsychotic and antidepressant medications. People experiencing akathisia have an intense and very disturbing sense of restlessness, agitation, or anxiety.

Akathisia can be treated by either lowering the dose of the medication that is causing it, switching to another type of antipsychotic or antidepressant, or adding other medications (such as beta-blockers) that may reduce akathisia.
