Definition: The limbic system is an area of the brain that is involved in the creation and experience of emotion and memory (in addition to other functions). The limbic system is made of several brain structures, including the hypothalamus, thalamus, hippocampus, and amygdala.

Because of its important role in our emotional life, dysfunction in the limbic system has been linked to borderline personality disorder (BPD).
