Psychotropic drugs are chemicals that affect the central nervous system, altering psychological processes (e.g., mood, thoughts, perception, emotions, behavior). Some psychotropic drugs are most often taken recreationally (e.g., caffeine, marijuana, cocaine, heroin). Others are used for their psychotropic properties as medications (e.g., antipsychotics, antidepressants, anxiolytics).
