Definition: What is a tricyclic? Tricyclics are a class of medications that are used primarily to treat symptoms of depression. These medications work by increasing the availability of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. Tricyclics have also shown some utility in treating symptoms of other psychiatric disorders, including borderline personality disorder (BPD).
