Definition:

The highest level of care. Inpatient Hospitalization is required for those unable to keep themselves safe, due to suicidal thoughts, homicidal thoughts, or psychosis.

Hospitalization occurs at a free standing psychiatric hospital or the psychiatric unit of a full service medical facility. Admissions to units are typically emergency in nature, although some less urgent care may be arranged by a psychiatrist if she feels a patient requires IP level of care.

Psychiatric wards are locked, and although admission may be voluntary, leaving requires medical approval or petition of the court. Patients receive individual, group, and psychiatric services daily.

In the event that emergency inpatient care is needed, a person should go to the nearest Emergency Room, without regard to psychiatric bed availability. The medical personnel will ensure transfer to an appropriate facility.
