From the article: Should I Tell Others I Have BPD?
Because of the stigma attached to borderline personality disorder (BPD), many people have a hard time disclosing their diagnosis. Have you told others that you have borderline personality disorder? What did you tell them, and how did they react? Share your experiences with disclosing your diagnosis. Share Your Experience
Stigmatized? Quite the opposite!
- Maybe it's me... When I tell people I was diagnosed Borderline they look at me as if I was joking (until they witness one of my temper tantrums or suicidal threat). They even seem to admire me. Or, like in self-help groups, they seem glad to hear that, cause they can open up and tell everybody their most weird secrets! I think it's fair to tell people what we've come up against in life, and how hard it is for us to live a 'normal' life. Once I used to hide my diagnosis, now it's one of the first confessions I make when I know someone, and I'm actually proud of how I'm coping. I expect people to take my diagnosis into account when they judge me (cause that's what we all do). Stigmatized? Oh come on, some of us have 140 IQ! Some of us are bright, effective, hard working, have a sharp sense of humour, have creative careers, an adventurous sexual life. Excuse me, I'm taking the advantages as well!!!! Be well Alexa

disclosure on BPD DIAGNOSIS
- Not a good idea! Told my GP and it's as if the curtain went down between us. She has only had exposure to hospitalized patients and doesn't appreciate the full spectrum of high to low functioning persons. I regret having told her and only did so because of the medication I was on. Thank you
